Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Olufemi Bamiro on Friday had to abandon official schedules to apologise to the Muslim Community of the institution over the invasion of the university mosque by a Christian student during the weekly Jumat service.
The Christian female student, identified as Oluwaseun Adegunsoye, a 400 Level Law student, according to sources, was said to have disguised as a Muslim worshipper, covering herself with a veil, and lined up at the upper chamber of the mosque reserved for females.
It was gathered that that trouble started during the service when a female student of the school who was seated among female worshippers suddenly shouted, “Jesus will soon come, you should accept Christ as your Lord and Saviour . Allah cannot save you. Except you accept Christ in your life, you are not safe. Allah is not God, Jesus is God”.
She reportedly began her preaching when the congregation was silent, waiting for the prompting of the Imam to go into prostration and thereafter sought to escape before the prayers could be concluded but was prevented by some female worshippers.
The source maintained that the action of the Christian student enraged Muslim worshippers at the mosque, who attempted to mob her the moment the prayer was over but were persuaded by the officials of the Muslim community led by the Chief Imam, Prof. AbdulRahman Oloyede. The irate Muslim worshippers described the action of the Christian student as an affront and an act of provocation, which must be visited with all the might at their disposal.
For about an hour after the service ended, angry male students still lurked around the premises of the mosque with the intention of dealing with the lady for what they described as “an affront and unwarranted provocation.” The irate Muslim worshippers maintained that the Christian student was reportedly sponsored to provoke them to riot and vowed to descend on
her to teach her and others like her some lessons. The Vice Chancellor who was hurriedly invited to the mosque in the course of the disagreement to douse the tension had to plead with the Muslim students and other worshippers to forget about the issue. But the university’s security personnel and mosque officials successfully shielded the Christian students from the irate worshippers who have become restive. Bamiro, described the action as “a very surprising and an unfortunate incident” and promised that the school authority would investigate the incident and guide against recurrence.
“We will look into the matter and ensure that justice is done. We will take a drastic step. We must prevent this kind of occurrence,” Bamiro said. THISDAY sources hinted that there was a peaceful protest by some Muslim students on the campus on Sunday morning. Meanwhile, the Muslim community has called on the state government to wade into the matter and set up a panel to unearth the immediate and remote causes of the Christian student action. The Community through its Chairman, AbdulWaheed Olajide and Deputy Secretary, AbdulRasheed Adegoke appealed to restive youths not to take the laws into their hands.
